As the next step in Honda’s electrification strategy in North America, the company will focus on increasing hybrid volume of core models: CR-V, Accord and, in the future, Civic. Hybrids will represent the top and best performing models in the lineup. To make room for these moves, Honda will conclude Insight production in June.

Hybrids don’t have to be luxury vehicles. As an example, the UCS “Hybrid Scorecard” gives both the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a high “hybrid value” rating. But both models come with forced features that cost nearly as much as their hybrid drivetrains.

Consumer Reports fuel economy tests found the Honda Accord Hybrid delivered impressive overall fuel-economy of 40 mpg (5.88 l/100 km), tying the smaller Honda Civic Hybrid and falling below the top-performing and smaller Toyota Prius hatchback by only 4 mpg. —Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports.

Monthly US sales of hybrids. Reported sales of hybrids in the US reported by Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM and Nissan dropped 45.5% year-on-year in April to 21,735, despite full month sales for the new Honda Insight and the Ford Fusion and Milan hybrids. Year-to-date in 2009, hybrids are holding a 2.4% of all Civics sold.
