Nissan is about to drink GM’s milkshake with a breakthrough, affordable, next generation electric car that will be beat the Chevy Volt to market, cost half as much and work twice as well. Plus it looks ten times cooler. Really Ford? The “new&# Ford Taurus?

I have seen the future my friends and it looks exactly like a 76 degree January day filled with beautiful people driving gorgeous plug-in hybrid and plug-in electric cars. A number of other plug-in hybrids, including models from GM, Chrysler, and Toyota, are scheduled to come out in the next few years. Two 150-kilowatt electric motors together deliver 403 horsepower--enough to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 5.8 The Tesla Roadster can go 244 miles on a charge, but recharging it takes hours.

Here’s what the brainiacs at General Motors sent the premier EV car conference on the West Coast. Ford and whatever it is they call Chrysler this week didn’t even bother to show up. Get to know Coulomb they make the CHARGEPOINT charging stations and they make them good. At least GM did a Disney display.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10.

The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year.
