BMW Group and Vattenfall Europe have begun a second phase of the Mini E test fleet in Berlin, with the transfer of 70 MINI E electric vehicles to private customers (30 units) and fleet users (40 units). The MINI E were charged mainly at night, using certified green electricity from Vattenfall.

The BMW Group will launch its Megacity Vehicle in 2013, said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, on Thursday ahead of the Auto China 2010 show in Beijing. Back in 2009, the MINI E electric car was BMW''s very first attempt at building a battery-electric vehicle. The fleet of several hundred electric MINIs was leased out to volunteer test drivers in the U.S., Europe, China, and the U.K. Now it appears that BMW.'

BMW Group and its Chinese joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. Series production of the automobile is to start in China in 2013. The prototype plug-in is part of the BMW Group’s electromobility strategy for China. This also applies to field testing of the BMW ActiveE.

Beginning this year a test fleet of more than 1,100 BMW ActiveE vehicles on the road in the US, Europe and China will provide further valuable insights into the everyday use of the vehicle. The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the BMW i3.

The University of California, Davis and the BMW Group released the largest publicly available study of electric-car users yet conducted, including more than 120 families who drove the fully electric MINI E automobile more than 1 million miles in California, New York and New Jersey from June 2009 to June 2010.
