The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf earned the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the first US crash test evaluations of plug-in electric cars. The GEM and Whip belong to a class of golf cart-like vehicles that aren’t required to meet the same federal safety standards as passenger vehicles.

New York City is adding 70 electric vehicles to its fleet: 50 new Chevrolet Volts, 10 fully electric Ford Transit Connect cargo vans, and 10 new fully electric Navistar E-star utility trucks. The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric car being used by the NYPD. Mayor Bloomberg announces the addition of 70 new electric vehicles.

It’s a series plug-in hybrid like the Chevrolet Volt. Various other companies are currently designing and developing fleets of fully electric emergency vehicles, including golf carts for police and ATVs for search-and-rescue operations. Capitol Hill made for a strange sight earlier this week as it was surrounded by everything from two-seat sports cars to vehicles that resembled golf carts and bucket trucks. The Chevrolet Equinox was also there, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. All of the cars ran on electricity or biofuels in addition to petroleum.

Their Rechargeit.org campaign really makes the connections between renewable power and plug-in cars.
