Granted, an A310 EV would probably garner some attention if designed well. But the brand isn’t known for SUVs and crossovers, it’s known for building extremely lightweight performance and race cars in small quantities. One could have also said that of Porsche in 2002.

The launch edition of the R1T and it’s SUV close relation the R1S, went on sale late in 2021 – Rivian production started in September 2021 – and people have been tripping over themselves to get hold of limited supply. A sizeable 142kWh battery pack was claimed to cover about 320km between charges. We’re watching on with interest.

In the 1960s, Americans were enjoying cheap gasoline and everyday automobiles boasting some of the largest engines ever manufactured. This explains why the industry seems totally obsessed with selling crossover vehicles, SUVs, and pickup trucks to Americans. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been taking place over the last few decades.

Granted, the recently-arrived Tesla Model Y makes just as much sense, but it wasn’t available as we were pulling this test together. None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. Against mid-sized SUVs from Hyundai and Kia the Model Y makes more sense. Sure, there are cheaper options.

A mid-spec EV9 Earth is around $120,000 in the traffic, while the entry-level Air is a comparatively cheap $107,000. The rear two seats rise and fold with a simple strap pull – unfussy and perfectly easy – as is the handle or electric button to move forward the middle seats to grant access.
