I have seen the future and it is a new car electric car from Nissan. Nissan is about to drink GM’s milkshake with a breakthrough, affordable, next generation electric car that will be beat the Chevy Volt to market, cost half as much and work twice as well. Plus it looks ten times cooler. Really Ford? Are you kidding me?

Drivers of the BMW ActiveE will be able to recharge their electric vehicle at any ChargePoint Network-enabled electric vehicle charging station in the US. Ongoing field tests involving more than 600 MINI E cars, including 450 in the US, have already provided knowledge about the demands on future electrically powered production vehicles.

The project, which will put 340 vehicles on the road in trials within the next six to eighteen months, will be the biggest of its kind and is intended to accelerate the availability of low carbon cars to consumers. Modern electric cars offer power and bucket loads of torque. Low Carbon doesn’t mean low performance.

Last week, Nissan announced plans to make electric car batteries at its plant in Sunderland, creating 350 new jobs in the process (see ‘ Nissan to make electric car batteries at Sunderland plant ’). So is Britain really in a position to be a green car leader? Electric cars remain something of a gamble.

Both ministers drove a MINI E electric car at the event as they announced plans to support motorists by providing help worth £2000-£5000 towards buying their first electric or plug-in hybrid car when they hit the showrooms. And what better time to do this than in the year we celebrate the 50th birthday of MINI.

BMW unveiled the i3 and i8 Concepts in Frankfurt, providing a look at first electrically powered production cars from the new BMW i sub-brand, due to be launched as the BMW i3 in 2013 and the i8 in 2014.
