The production of 5 million metric tons of green ammonia produced per year would eliminate 13 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent of taking 9 million gasoline-fueled cars off the road. At 5GW, this would be the largest electrolyzer reservation of any type.

Hydrogen is stored in a tank, then fed to a fuel cell unit to produce electricity (and hot water) when required. Over the two years of the project, Tohoku Electric will monitor the viability of the hydrogen power storage system as a solution for offsetting power output fluctuations caused by an expansion of renewables.
