Darryl Siry blogs over at Wired's Autopia. The Honda EV+ used the same Panasonic EV-95 NiMH battery modules with an active system, and those packs didn't last as long. At least with NiMH, Toyota's passive system worked out better in the real world. He's pretty plugged in, having worked at Tesla and consulted for CODA.

Plug-In Conversions Corp www.pluginconversions.com of Poway, near San Diego, CA converts the Toyota Prius using NiMH batteries and the EAA-PHEV open source control system, and will provide kits to qualified DIY installers. With NiMH batteries - those that provide energy to every hybrid on the road and thousands of all-electric cars - the Volt plug-in hybrid could go into production today. Sharon Terlep's story doesn't mention it, but in the hydrogen Volt GM has made another arbitrary decision, as announced on GM's Volt blog.

Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars. More often than not, the “recycling&# of NiMH or lithium-ion batteries involves shipping them off to places like China, where their fate is truly unknown.
