Darryl Siry blogs over at Wired's Autopia. He's a bit surprised, as are all of us, that Nissan has emerged as the first big automaker to manufacture a mass-produced electric car. The Honda EV+ used the same Panasonic EV-95 NiMH battery modules with an active system, and those packs didn't last as long. Buyer beware!

In January GM announced the Volt, a smart idea that makes use of the two existing primary energy infrastructures - the electric grid and gasoline stations. With NiMH batteries - those that provide energy to every hybrid on the road and thousands of all-electric cars - the Volt plug-in hybrid could go into production today.

Until then, we also recommend you look at the FAQ at the Climate Progress Blog and the FAQ by Hybrids-Plus , an after-market converter of hybrid cars, for answers to many questions! Dont PHEVs just shift pollution from gasoline cars to power plants? But it works best if we use plug-in hybrids to power most of our miles electrically.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen. todays answer is "Yes -- but not yet."
