The 100% renewable electricity mix in Chengdu is the result of a newly signed supply contract and will reduce the plant’s CO 2 emissions by more than 11,000 tonnes per year. By 2040, Volvo Cars aims to be a climate-neutral company. These and other measures are part of the climate plan Volvo Cars launched late last year.

At an event held at its steel plant in Ghent, Belgium, ArcelorMittal inaugurated its flagship carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project. The move will significantly reduce Audi’s carbon emissions and also save money. Battery modules and cells needed in Belgium for the Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron Sportback were up to now transported by truck over the approximately 1,300-kilometer-long route from the supplier in Hungary. In Hungary and Belgium, Audi uses DBeco neutral.

The aim of the project, which involves seven European trials in total, is to investigate how hydrogen-fueled trucks can be an effective solution in reducing emissions in refuse vehicles. A 45 kW fuel cell module was installed in the former engine compartment of the vehicle. Wietholt is also a service partner of Allison Transmission.

The strategy is centred around two main technology routes, as introduced in the first ArcelorMittal Europe climate action report published earlier this year: The use of hydrogen in DRI-EAF (Direct Reduced Iron - Electric Arc Furnace) and, also, the blast furnace.
