Battery Boxes Have Shipped!

Electro Auto e-mailed me again today to say that the battery racks and boxes have shipped and should arrive on Tuesday! I ran out and purchased several 1-guage pre-constructed battery cables from Napa today to wire the batteries together, but they were very expensive (16 of them at $12.95 Parkrose hardware had it for $7.00/foot

I took the day off to walk around Portland to the farmers market and EV awareness day with Krista. This was originally just a human powered vehicle made in Belgium, but the owner added an electric motor to power the rear third wheel to get up the hills in Portland (of which there aren't many in Belgium).

Measuring State-of-Charge on Lead Acid Batteries

Since I'm still waiting on parts from ElectroAuto, I decided to take the plunge and do some extensive research on Lead-Acid battery technology. The 914 AC kit uses 8V golf cart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better.

Anyone got a clutch?

The conversion process highly recommends installing a new clutch assembly, so I ordered a clutch kit from Driving Source NW in Salem, OR (part # POR055822) on December 27th. Another part of the conversion involves upgrading the suspension (torsion bar and springs/shocks) on the 914 to handle the extra 800 pounds that come from the batteries.

Two Week Commuting Report

The batteries are broken in so I have more current to work with and more importantly 2. With the charger plugin at both work and home, the PakTrakr fuel gauge doesn't seem to drop below the 80% mark, so I think the batteries will last a little while. Two things have definitely made the car more fun to drive. Stay tuned.
