A leasing program of 450 Mini E model cars is set to begin in the US. Over the next few weeks a select number of customers in New Jersey, New York and California will take delivery of a fully electric version of the Mini Coupe as part of a trial program. 62 mph in 8.5 62 mph in 8.5 hours to charge.

The electrical motor draws its energy from a high-voltage battery pack, housed in the luggage compartment, which can be charged via the grid. When running purely on electrical power, it is possible to travel for up to 75 kilometers (47 miles) at a constant speed of 60 km/h (37 mph).

The drive components and battery technology that will be used in the MCV are being tested in the BMW ActiveE. The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E. To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. Those of us familiar with powerful EVs were curious where the drive train for the MINI E originated.

The MINI E. As the second half of the twelve-month MINI E field trial begins in the UK this week, BMW has released an overview of the outcome of interviews and objective data collected from the first three months of the December to June 2010 phase of the trial. The MINI E is a two-seat development of the MINI Hatch.
