Measuring State-of-Charge on Lead Acid Batteries

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

Since I'm still waiting on parts from ElectroAuto, I decided to take the plunge and do some extensive research on Lead-Acid battery technology. The 914 AC kit uses 8V golf cart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better.

Playing with PakTrakr

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

Many months ago, I installed a PakTrakr ( www.paktrakr.com ) to monitor the state of my batteries and it's been acting rather flakey. The voltage displayed shows the pack voltage and is supposed to monitor the state of each battery and the State-Of-Charge (SOC) for the pack too.

Reflections on Converting a 914 to an EV

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

Here goes (in no particular order): Things That Went Well During the Conversion The 914 AC kit from Electro Automotive is a good one. I modified the wiring in the original 914 AC kit (as suggested by Paul Jorg) to turn on the regen when the brake lights came on instead of controlling regen by releasing the accelerator pedal.

Hacking the Regen System and Fixing Acceleration

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

It turns out that if the voltage coming from my batteries fell into the 136 to 149 volt range (EE2NoAccelBat + EE2AccelRamp = 149), then the controller would linearly limit the power going into the motor down to zero when the voltage reached 136. I recommend this alteration to anyone using this kit! Mine was set to 136 volts.
