The BMW Group is launching production of battery components at its plants in Leipzig and Regensburg and expanding its e-drive production network. BMW Group Plant Leipzig will launch series production of battery modules on Monday, 3 May 2021, while BMW Group Plant Regensburg began coating battery cells for high-voltage batteries in April 2021.

BMW Group Plant Leipzig has brought its second battery module production line on stream. Further expanding e-component production in the German state of Saxony, the new system manufactures modules for the fully electric BMW i4, made in Munich. The BMW Group is deepening its existing business relationships with battery cell manufacturers CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. The BMW Group is the first customer of the CATL battery cell plant currently under construction in Erfurt, Germany. In this way, we are securing our long-term battery cell needs.

The plant’s two existing battery module lines will be complemented by a further line plus five cell-coating lines. These will be followed by two new high-voltage battery assembly lines due to go on stream in 2024. The battery cells they will process will be manufactured by external suppliers working to BMW Group specifications.

The BMW Group has signed a long-term supply contract worth €2 billion for battery cells with the Swedish company Northvolt. The battery cells will be produced in Europe at the Northvolt gigafactory currently under construction in Skellefteå in northern Sweden (series plant Northvolt Ett) from 2024.

Daimler AG is expanding its global battery production network and is paving the way for the creation of a cross-divisional electro initiative. Accumotive was founded in 2009 is producing lithium ion-batteries for Mercedes-Benz and smart brand vehicles. Mercedes-Benz cars will invest €10 billion in the expansion of its electric fleet.
