According to the official VFACTS figures, there were 3330 examples of the battery electric SUV sold in Australia last month. It is also a big reason the popularity of Chinese-made cars is exploding in Australia, as both the Model 3 and Model Y are made in Shanghai. Tesla’s tally is obviously the key to the 385.4

We’ve chosen the rangiest model available in the line-up, including those where a larger battery is available. Tesla Model 3 587km: Mercedes-AMG EQS53, $324,800 Rapid, high-priced AMG limo uses huge 107.8kWh battery for its 587km range, but fully exploit the EQS53’s 484kW and 950Nm and possible distance will quickly tumble.

Audi e-Tron GT – the BEV guts of the regular e-Tron (also shared with Porsche’s Taycan) in a coupe-inspired four-door body. Avatar E11 – a new brand with big dreams, Avatar has input from Huawei and CATL and is the product of Chinese car maker Changan. Sleeker Sportback model will also be part of the e-Tron S range.

The top selling brand has been caught flat-footed in the EV race and in 2023 we will see the arrival of the company’s first battery electric vehicle, the bZ4X. To continue the earlier theme, I’m looking forward to driving three new Chinese EV entries to the Australian market, all of them potentially offering outstanding value for money.

In short, the Chinese have reached near parity with some of their competitors in almost alarmingly quick time.

There are also some big brands that have so far not dabbled in the EV space in Australia readying their first battery electric models. It won’t be cheap, but Audi’s e-Tron GT and its more potent RS e-Tron GT sibling promise big performance. As with the Atto 3 and Dolphin, the Seal gets BYD’s in-house Blade battery pack.
