No one will ever confuse the Leaf for an even remotely sporty car, but it rides and handles relatively well for a commuter car. Sure, some EVs are now giving buyers 300 miles or more of range – which goes a long way to alleviating range anxiety. The Leaf, however, has just 212 miles of range available from the SV Plus.

The cars have come a long way since we purchased the original LEAF, which was a simple commuter's car; now the whole industry is moving into futuristic transportation. The adaptive cruise control maintains a preselected distance from the car ahead and will bring the EV to a complete stop.

The way the EPA vehicle standards are structured, the average of each automaker’s fleet (all of the light-duty vehicles manufactured in a given year) must meet targets of grams/mile of specified pollutants each year. The target amount of average tailpipe emissions gets a bit lower each year, resulting in progressively cleaner cars.

This is the car that we take on family trips, and it is also the daily commute car now that the EV1 has been returned to GM. Toyota has made these cars for fleet use since 1996, and there are several cars with well over 100,000 miles on them that are going strong - on the original battery packs.
