Finally, D and F: I’ve seen several racing movies, enjoy watching real-life car racing, have played Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto. The Compass is a nice little ‘ute, but it’s not being mistaken for a Bentley anytime soon. Hell, a bicyclist will get it.

It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery. Best of all, Volvo has handed over its dashboard and infotainment software to Android Auto. On the other hand, both cars have Android Auto in the dash, which proved to be a much more compelling feature than I’d expected.

Although it looks cheap, the feel of the door handle is more premium than you might expect. Outside the LE there’s a constant reminder of base trim via some very cheap-looking plastic wheel covers. Worth reporting: Android Auto sometimes refused to connect to a phone (Google Pixel 6a). The sound is otherwise not great.

I dunno if it’s the biggest surprise, but the most pleasing news of 2022 was the way the irrepressible die-hards in what remains of the Aussie auto industry leapt on the opportunity EV presents. Powered by Google’s Android Automotive operating system, its responsiveness is superior to just about anything else on the market today.

As with the ICE alternatives, expect a long list of standard equipment in a well-presented package, although we hope the driver assist technologies (such as lane departure warning and auto braking) are improved. None of which will be cheap, the Polestar 3 is priced from $132,900 before on-roads. Polestar 4 Polestar 4.
