BYD sold 98% of its hybrid cars at home last year, and eight of the 10 top-selling plug-in hybrid cars in China, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, did not respond to requests for comment.

Some of the new and updated models, such as a battery-powered version of Geelys Panda hatchback, may hit the market as early as October, and in some cases they might carry price tags low enough for farmers and other rural residents with limited financial means. BYD has said it is aware of these issues and is working resolve them.
