Swiss team concludes that particulate filters should be mandatory for GDI engines

Green Car Congress

Empa researchers Norbert Heeb and Maria Munoz discovered large quantities of benzo(a)pyrene (red bar)—a combustion product responsible for cutting short the lives of cigarette smokers—in the exhaust gas emitted by GDI engines. The other vehicles were all built between 2010 (VW Golf, Euro 4) and 2016 (Citroën C4, Euro 6b).

EEA report: EVs are better for climate and air quality

Green Car Congress

For local air quality, electric vehicles also offer clear benefits, mainly due to zero exhaust emissions at street level. BEVS can offer local air quality benefits due to zero exhaust emissions, e.g., nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and particulate matter (PM). —“Electric vehicles from life cycle and circular economy perspectives”.

U Toronto study measures GDI emissions in urban near-road environment

Green Car Congress

In comparison, average PN EFs from a PFI vehicle exhibited less spatial variability, with mean PN EFs 15 m from the roadway 17% lower than those measured 3 m from the roadway. Some projections expect the 2016 market share of new LDVs with GDI engines to exceed 50%.
