The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

The 2017 edition of the BP Energy Outlook , published today, forecasts that global demand for energy will increase by around 30% between 2015 and 2035, an average growth of 1.3% billion cars in 2015 to 1.8 Coal consumption is projected to peak in the mid-2020s, largely driven by China’s move towards cleaner, lower-carbon fuels.
