Vattenfall and the BMW Group have signed a contract for the delivery of up to 1,000 lithium-ion batteries this year. The study has two parts, a managed charge pilot program involving BMW i3 owners and a battery second life energy storage system. In the managed charge pilot program, select BMW i3 owners will allow PG&E to request a delay in the charging of their vehicles by up to an hour, when grid loads are at their peak. SB LiMotive, the joint venture between Bosch and Samsung SDI, has been selected to supply lithium-ion batteries for the upcoming Megacity vehicle - an electric city vehicle from BMW. The company hopes to produce a battery pack for around €350 by 2015 - that’s around two thirds of the current cost.
