Member States of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), meeting at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) earlier this month, adopted the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships. Life cycle GHG assessment guidelines adopted. MEPC 80 met 3-7 July 2023 at IMO Headquarters in London.

HPHT issues are not new; Schlumberger’s quarterly publication Oilfield Review examined HPHT issues in 1998 and again in 2008. Ultra-HP/HT wells are currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico, on the shelf and in deep water.

They also question whether mandated volumes for biofuels—including advanced biofuels—can be met and whether biofuels are improving the environment or energy security. The bill mandated ambitious production targets of 9 billion gallons of biofuels a year in 2008, rising to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022.
