Through the use of renewable energy, Nissan Mexicana has prevented 152,800 tons of CO 2 from entering the atmosphere, and has so far assembled 460,000 vehicles with wind power and 57,400 vehicles with biogas power from the city’s landfills. In all, the use of clean energies accounted for 68% of the production at the Aguascalientes A1 Plant.

In 2003 JEC issued its first Well-to-Wheels study, a type of analysis which takes into account the entire energy lifecycle of fuels and powertrains and their possible combinations. Biogas, particularly from waste materials, has a very low GHG impact, whether the biogas is used to fuel cars or produce electricity.

Plus more people are installing rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, and clean wind power is vastly expanding nationally (see study by eminent environmentalist Lester Brown cited at CalCars Kudos ). In some areas where wind and hydropower is wasted at night, the rate can be as low as 2-3 cents per kWh. Thats 20-25 cents a gallon.

Other than sports car wanna-bes, modern cars are so quiet that you hear tire/wind noise much more than engines. Despite this, a 2003 EPRI study , assuming only $2/gallon gas , zero buying incentives, and a PHEV premium of $3-$5,000 more than standard hybrids, shows that the total lifetime cost of ownership for a PHEV will be lower than that of any other vehicle type -- so the payback will be there. How about a car-mounted wind-generator?
