International shipyard group Damen recently delivered the first of a series of three hybrid tugboats (ASD TUGs 2810 Hybrid) to the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN). The two additional Swedish tugs are also of a standard design, but designed for operations in icy waters. The MTU brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The concept is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Within the Netherlands transport sector, inland navigation accounts for 5% of carbon dioxide emissions. With the help of a 2000 kWh Repack container, an inland vessel can sail for two to four hours.

Collaborating on the paper were scientists from Utrecht University, the Netherlands Royal Meteorological Institute, Delft University of Technology, Bristol University (UK) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (USA). The Greenland ice sheet contains enough water to cause a global sea level rise of seven metres.

Avantium, which spun off from Shell in 2000 to develop furan-based biofuels and biomaterials ( earlier post ), has raised €30 million (US$43.9 Avantium will use the funds for the construction and operation of its pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands, and for the development of green materials on basis of these YXY building blocks.

Historical analysis shows strong acceleration of plantation development in recent years: 70% of all industrial plantations have been established since 2000 and only 4% of the current plantation area existed in 1990. Tropical peatlands cover more than 25 Mha in Southeast Asia and are estimated to contain around 70 Gt of carbon.

The study was led by scientists at Utrecht University, working with colleagues at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and the University of Southampton. Algae use photosynthesis to harvest the energy of the sun, converting carbon dioxide and water into the organic molecules required for growth.
