Day care service. Battery manufacturing unit debacle. Now robots?

According to Reuters multiple sources behind the scenes have confirmed the affordable EV is no longer happening with resources switched to developing self-driving robotaxis. Tesla has admitted it is struggling at the moment with overall sales down eight per cent year-on-year while Chinese rivals like BYD are reporting record sales.

Affordable EVs seem to be a nut that no automaker can crack, as every promise of a “sub-$30,000” model or similar has fallen through in favor of higher prices. CEO Elon Musk has been beating the affordable EV drum for a while, telling investors in January that the car would enter production in Texas as soon as late 2025.

Also expected is a performance EV5 GT, though that model is currently only seen in Chinese government documentation. While a hot EV9 would be interesting, it likely won’t be affordable. The smaller, five-door hatchback EV3 will land soon but isn’t coming to the United States.
