South Korean automaker Kia has started production on its all-electric EV5 SUV for export in China, with the first markets targeted being Thailand and Australia, with Australia’s price expected to undercut Tesla’s Model Y. Kia’s top seller in Australia is the Sportage hybrid SUV with around 15,000 sales.

It appears that South Korean automaker Kia is taking some steps to ensure that its EV9 all-electric SUV will qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit in the United States next year. Currently, production of the EV9 is in South Korea, but Kia is looking to start manufacturing the all-electric SUV at its West Point, Georgia plant.

The 3,800 team members, as Hyundai calls them, are building the all-new 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 that joins electric models of the GV60 EV and the Electrified G80 , both of which are assembled in South Korea. Charging on the 800-volt system should enable a 10% to 80% battery charge in 18 minutes on a 350 kW DC Fast Charger.

The EV9 is also the only electric three-row SUV built on an 800-volt architecture, permitting super-quick road-trip fast-charging of 10-80% in less than 25 minutes, according to Kia. The first models come from South Korea, but that’s set to change by mid-2024 with the arrival of U.S.-built coefficient of drag.

Timing: PVB production is in South Korea with the North America on-sale date to be announced. The 800-volt architecture also enables high-power 300+ kW DC charging, which can deliver up to 248 miles of range in 15 minutes. There will be a total of four models: a four-door coupe, a shooting brake (station wagon) and two SUVs.
