Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. Only PHEVs and battery EVs get cleaner as they get older - because the electric grid gets cleaner every decade. But theyve needed definitive proof that PHEVs wont increase pollution.

Whilst hydrogen today is extracted from natural gas and is already a global, multi-billion dollar industry used in a wide range of industrial applications, it is also produced from renewable sources like solar, wind or biogas without the need to use fossil fuels. Of course, this also has the merit of producing so-called “green hydrogen”.

Wont all these cars require us to build even more power plants? The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) estimates that the current power grid could handle many tens of millions of cars plugging in at off-peak hours before wed have any capacity issues [See EPRI article PDF ]. How about a car-mounted wind-generator?

The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants. Depending upon where you live, power plants are often burning natural resources. The true impact of electric vehicles should consider the make-up of the power grids where these cars will be used.
