Running on 87 octane, the front wheels (all-wheel drive is not available) are driven through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has five driver selectable drive modes of Eco, Normal, Sport, Slippery and Snow/Sand. That number jumps to 105 MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent, when combining electricity and gasoline.

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. Oil is holding us all hostage, economically and physically. The good news?

The MiEV runs on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged in seven or so hours on a 240-volt line. The Chevy Volt is going to count on an overnight charge from a standard wall outlet. There are choices for 110 volt versus 220 volt, slow versus quick charges, and solar options. By 2011 look for a larger THINK Ox.
