Hydraulic hybrid systems consist of two key components: high pressure hydraulic fluid vessels called accumulators, and hydraulic drive pump/motors. Acting as a motor, the hydraulic drive uses the pressurized fluid to rotate the wheels. The gas engine will remain off if the accumulator charge is sufficient to drive the motor.

This is essentially the Lexus variant of the Toyota BZ4X, with the same battery and charging, but significantly more powerful motors, and fractionally less range. Buzz, in #4, is proving popular – surely the first minivan that has become a regular in the top 5 in Norway. Recall that it only launched in volume in October.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric minivan has been coming to North America for a long, long time. It’s longer than the one sold in Europe, has a genuine third row of seats, a larger battery and a more powerful motor, and available all-wheel drive. On one hand, it’s a retro re-creation of a beloved vehicular icon from a Boomer past.
