The XC90 Recharge is an example of the second group. A plug-in hybrid vehicle is especially good for local electric motoring with the freedom to burn gas on a longer trip.

Of course, most owners of EVs use their vehicles in a local environment and, those that can, charge their vehicle’s battery overnight at home or during the day at work. Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight. Nowadays the biggest concern is finding a charging station when needed.

Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) home wall units are priced at between about $1000 and $2500. All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. This will actually be sufficient for many if not most Volt drivers, and quite a few LEAF drivers. Plus installation. Need it cost this much?

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. GM Reported Ready To Give Volt Battery Nod to Unit of LG Chem. Lots going on with batteries now, as John O’Dell’s piece below illustrates. that got the nod.
