Bright Automotive has applied for $35 million in government grants to accelerate the production of its plug-in hybrid the IDEA ( earlier post ), and to deliver battery solutions to the industry through its engineering services arm. The company continues to work with the Department of Energy in support of its application.

“Any new technology like the Chevy Volt takes time to become profitable,&# said Jay Friedland, the legislative director for Plug-In America , an electric-car advocacy group. is hoping to launch the Volt in late 2010 with a price tag of about $40,000. About $750 million is needed for near-term Volt development, according to the company.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission , which regulates interstate transmission of electricity, is on board with the idea. Now, people are used to cellphone subscription plans and plugging the phone into the wall at night, Mr. Thesen reasoned, so a switch to electric cars would also be manageable.
