Startup Bright Automotive announced last week that, once the company completes its funding, its advanced plug-in hybrid Idea delivery van would be assembled under contract by AM General. That's the outfit that built the Humvee and Hummer H1, and spawned the now-defunct HUMMER brand, including the HUMMER H2--which AM General also.

The BYD ute will kick off with a plug-in hybrid system that pairs a 1.5-litre Hummer used to be a stand-alone brand of heavy-duty 4x4s that GM killed off during the Global Financial Crisis. Less expensive and powerful Hummers will launch later. It has now re-established it as an electrified sub-brand of GMC.

An American green technology company has developed a hybrid Hummer capable of over 100mpg. Raser Technologies, the company behind the hybrid hummer, claims to have achieved the impossible by greening up one of the cars with the worse environmental record. Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade. This marketing choice by Ford is either a very bad idea (brand dilution) or a genius plan to move the pony car into the modern era. I’m hoping for the latter. as a 1999 model.

However, its parent company seems likely to devote at least as much marketing to the GMC Hummer EV coming late this year [and the Cadillac Lyriq that will follow early in 2022] as to the much smaller, much less noticeable and glamorous tall hatchback—regardless of its 250-mile projected range rating.
