In an EU-funded research project, an international consortium is aiming to develop new production methods for sustainable marine fuels to replace heavy fuel oils in shipping. This is cost competitive with Ultra-Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (ULSFO) which current, 2019, price level is €450-550/tonne. The participants are Vertoro B.V. (NL);

Neste Oil Corporation has filed a new patent infringement action against Dynamic Fuels, LLC, Syntroleum Corporation, and Tyson Foods, Inc. This follows a patent infringement action filed by Neste Oil in May 2012 ( earlier post ) against the same defendants concerning infringement of a Neste Oil product patent.

Avantium, which spun off from Shell in 2000 to develop furan-based biofuels and biomaterials, has begun construction of a pilot plant at the Chemelot site (Geleen, the Netherlands) to convert carbohydrates into furanic building blocks—which the company calls “YXY”—for making renewable materials and fuels.

The oil price shocks of the 1970s led the Brazilian government to address the strain high prices were placing on its fragile economy. Brazil, the largest and most populous country in South America, was importing 80% of its oil and 40% of its foreign exchange was used to pay for that imported oil.

Fats and greases and inedible oils are opportunity feedstocks, but the US supply of fats and greases is probably on the order of less than 10 million barrels, closer to 1-2 million barrels on an annual basis. The FCC catalyst particles are used in oil refineries to “crack” large molecules that are left after distillation of crude oil into smaller molecules, such as gasoline. This work was supported by the NWO Gravitation program, Netherlands Center for Multiscale Catalytic Energy Conversion, and a European Research Council Advanced Grant.
