Made from the residue left behind after production of gasoline, plastics, and other materials, asphalt still commands $700-800 per ton, or half the price of gasoline at $1,500 per ton, Wen estimates. In Iowa, for example, scientists are making a corn-based bioasphalt from residue left after the production of ethanol.

Lux Research has investigated the trends of corporate financing of alternative fuels from oil majors, based on a non-exhaustive database of more than 1,000 deals and partnership engagements from 2000 through September, 2014. Less active oil majors in this space include ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.

Thomas Bobik, professor of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology at Iowa State University is heading an effort to redesign an enzyme for the bio-based production of isobutene, a gas that is currently used in the production of a variety of chemicals and in the manufacture of other fuel additives, adhesive, plastics and synthetic rubber.

Five projects newly selected will help to replace the need for gasoline and diesel in vehicles. This project will optimize rapeseed/canola, mustard and camelina oilseed crops for oil quality and yield using recombinant inbred lines. The oils will be hydrotreated to produce diesel and jet fuel.
