Honda beat everybody to the production gasoline-electric hybrid game in the United States, putting the Insight in showrooms in 1999. Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here. gallon gas in order to recoup its cost over the pure-gazzoline version.

In December, Nissan announced its "Green Program 2010," projecting a line of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars utilizing lithium-ion batteries of its own manufacture. As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. We'll also be taking Burning Man art projects off petroleum generators by switching them to solar electricity. Google Guys Th!

How does this sound: 100+ MPG in a regular vehicle? You can fill it up at the gas station, and you can plug it in to any 120-volt outlet. But when you do, your car essentially becomes an electric vehicle with a gas-tank backup. But wait, theres more: If your driving is mostly local, youd almost never need to gas-up.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10. Aims to get Saturn Vue on road in 2010; no production goal.
