Toyota’s next-generation Prius will deliver significantly improved fuel economy in a more compact package that is lighter in weight and lower in cost, according to Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Managing Officer Satoshi Ogiso. Toyota’s first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will go on sale in global markets in 2015.

The RWD layout also allowed for increased hydrogen storage to boost EPA-estimated range to 402 miles (Mirai XLE grade), a 30% increase over the first-generation Mirai. Japanese automaker Toyota may be renowned for its petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, but now it can celebrate a significant achievement with a fuel cell hybrid. Its Toyota Highlander Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle Advanced achieved an estimated range of 431 miles on a single full tank of compressed hydrogen gas.

A hydrogen-powered version of Hyundai’s Tucson sport utility vehicle has already appeared in southern California showrooms. In August 2014, Hyundai’s ix35 fuel cell model was driven a record distance for a hydrogen-powered production car on a single tank, covering 435 miles across three Scandinavian countries.

It took 8 years for Prius to achieve the same level of purchase intention as Camry and Civic, O’Brien said, and it wasn’t until the introduction of the Gen 2 Prius, with improvements in size, comfort, and fuel economy that Prius grew beyond niche volumes.
