The cars Californians choose set the tone for EV sales for 2021. Here’s the top 10 and their sales (and links to our latest reviews/news): Tesla Model 3 EV – 67,262. Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988. Tesla and GM both exceeded the state’s 200,000-unit sales cap on rebates.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Perhaps at the top of the list of trends from our Scoreboard is how well the two PHEVs from Toyota sold.

Previous Prius PHEV conversion kits—including PICC’s earlier generations ( earlier post )—have been limited by Toyota programming to a top speed of 34 mph in all-electric mode. A software upgrade, retailing for $2,000 to $2,500, will be made available for sale later this month to new and existing conversion kit customers.

This is exactly what happened when we got our Toyota RAV EV six years ago. I heard today that they expect to have 5,000 Nissan EVs for sale by the end of 2010. The one question about whether the lessees can take the $7,500 tax credit is still to be determined. No charger, no car.

And while many of the legacy automakers – along with several states – have announced plans or “aspirations” to end production of ICE vehicles or ban their sale completely, the reality is we may not see a federal ban of ICE sales ever – or perhaps not before 2040.

The entry-level 2023 Fisker Ocean is so well-priced (under $30,000 after tax credits and/or incentives) for an electric SUV getting 250+ miles of driving range, the only thing left is seeing it in people’s driveways a year from now. Expect in the next few years to see at least 50 new models being released for sale.
