In September, GM’s plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt (2,851 units sold) and Toyota’s plug-in hybrid Prius PHV (1,652 units sold) continued to lead sales in the US of plug-in vehicles from major OEMs. The battery-electric Nissan Leaf followed with 984 units, a decrease from Sep 2011, but its best performance since then.

With the US sales numbers for the first quarter of 2013 in, Tesla appears to be the leading seller of plug-in vehicles for that period, with more than 4,750 units of the model S sold in North America. GM posted sales of 4,244 Volt extended range electric vehicles in the US in the second quarter, representing an 8.4%

By comparison, the Nissan LEAF carries a 99 MPGe (combined) EPA rating, while the smaller i-MiEV carries a 112 MPGe (combined) rating. The Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle and the Ford C-MAX Hybrid earned an acceptable rating in this test, while the battery-electric Nissan LEAF earned a poor rating. Two battery- electric models and a hybrid also are in the mix, with varied results. The gasoline-powered Mazda 5 small four-door wagon is rated poor.
