It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

BYD ute BYD ute patent shows what the EV ute will look like BYD is the biggest threat to Tesla globally and it’s also shaping up to give the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger something to worry about with a new ute. It has now re-established it as an electrified sub-brand of GMC. The Lightning will also be able to tow up to 4535kg.

We did not have the opportunity to assess laden performance or range and a brief 25-minute drive was not long enough to accurately assess how far one of these utes will travel before needing to re-juice – loaded, towing or otherwise. Ford claims a range of 510km, and by all accounts, this is a fairly accurate indication.
