The battery storage system electrified by BMW i is sized so it can be placed in the basement or the garage of a detached house, where the stored energy can either be used for electrically-operated devices in the home or for charging the battery of an electric car.

As part of the project “Norddeutsche Energiewende NEW 4.0”, Vattenfall, together with the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) and the company Nordex, will implement a large battery storage at the future wind farm in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Other possible applications would be electricity storage in private households.

Between 20 to 25% of the potential range of an electric vehicle is lost as a psychological safety buffer, according to a study by a doctoral candidate at Technische Universität Chemnitz in Germany. The MINI E project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

In recuperation, the electric motor functions as a generator to recharge the battery pack when the driver takes his or her foot off the gas pedal. Researchers at Chemnitz University also jointly developed with BMW special data logger for the vehicles and will conduct with each user a subjective assessment.

AC Propulsion has delivered an AC Propulsion-powered eBox to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where it will be used to evaluate Vehicle to Grid (V2G) operation as part of a research program. Integration between the power grid and electric vehicles will become essential and beneficial as EV numbers increase over the next decade.

The parallel hybrid system consists of a 160 kW (215 hp) BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and an electrical motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. The electrical motor draws its energy from a high-voltage battery pack, housed in the luggage compartment, which can be charged via the grid. This also applies to field testing of the BMW ActiveE.

The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids. Modern electric cars offer power and bucket loads of torque. The consortium will develop and demonstrate 110 road-worthy vehicles to be trialed in the two cities over 12 months, 40 of which will be smart electric vehicles.
