Medium-sized battery-electric cars are on average 14% cheaper to run than equivalent diesels today, if slow charging overnight near home and/or fast charging at preferential rates are available. T&E’s lifecycle CO 2 emission calculator estimates that today EVs cut CO 2 emissions by two-thirds on average across Europe compared to diesel cars.

As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. BEVs for every diesel car registered.

A ban on all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles made its way through the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 1. Proposed in July 2021, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Romania all pushed to delay the sales ban in mid-2022.

This approach is necessitated by the problems associated with petrol and diesel powered vehicles, such as environmental impact, rising fuel prices, the looming shortage of oil and the limitations of batteries available for electric vehicles. In 2015, six Member States (Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg and Portugal) did not attain their NMVOCs ceilings. The high real-world emissions of NO x , particularly from diesel passenger cars and vans, have contributed significantly to the share of emissions caused by the road transport sector.

In Europe, a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that the average car sold in the EU in 2012 was 9% more fuel-efficient than the average three years before, due to improved technology and an increase in the share of diesel cars. Diesel vehicles represent 55% of the newly registered vehicle fleet. CFA report.
