A team of scientists from Penn State and Florida State University have developed a lower cost and industrially scalable catalyst consisting of synthesized stacked graphene and W x Mo 1–x S 2 alloy phases that produces pure hydrogen through a low-energy water-splitting process.

The US Department of Energy has selected 13 projects for investment of up to $62 million over five years to research, develop, and demonstrate Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems capable of providing low-cost electrical power. These improvements will all be made in the hopes of driving down the cost of solar energy.

These projects are to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of non-conventional geothermal energy technologies in three research areas: low temperature fluids, geothermal fluids recovered from oil and gas wells, and highly pressurized geothermal fluids. Historically, this coproduced hot water has been treated as a waste product.

This project will develop and optimize a novel, engineered microorganism that produces a biodiesel-equivalent fuel from renewable hydrogen and carbon dioxide, at costs of less than $2.50 Water will be the primary byproduct. A novel metal complex for electrolysis of water will be used to generate the hydrogen at high rates.
