ABB officially opened a new plant for energy storage systems for mobility applications today in Baden, Switzerland. The facility represents an important investment in Switzerland as a production location. Unlike in Switzerland, many other European countries still have countless non-electrified railway lines.

While the current facility feeds pure hydrogen (“WindGas”) directly into the gas grid, the new methanation plant provides for the generation of “green” methane. In this second stage, hydrogen from regenerative energy sources is converted into methane (CH 4 ), i.e. synthetic natural gas, using CO 2 from a bio-ethanol plant.

Due to the high reaction temperatures, a proportion of the water is converted back into hydrogen by the water-gas shift reaction. The gaseous product of the methanization reaction thus contains a few percent hydrogen, which prevents direct feeding into the gas grid; the hydrogen must first be removed.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Schweiz AG has signed a cooperation agreement with ABB Switzerland for the development, production and commercialization of a three-way energy-storage system. The heat and cold can be converted back into electrical energy on demand. The electricity flows into the grid and is distributed to consumers.
