has selected Envergent Technologies LLC, a Honeywell company, to perform the engineering design for a project that will use Envergent’s RTP Rapid Thermal Processing technology ( earlier post ) to convert palm biomass to renewable heat and electricity.

Grant recipients are required to contribute a minimum of 20% of matching funds for research and development projects and 50% of matching funds for demonstration projects. The following projects have been selected for awards: Cellana LLC , Kailua Kona, Hawaii, $5,521,173. Each award was made through a competitive selection process.

The pilot-scale project use both free (soluble) sugars and biomass (cellulosic) sugars from Ceres’ sweet sorghum hybrids grown in Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana and Tennessee. There are currently 11 commercial plants at the Salton Sea field producing geothermal energy, a process in which hot fluids are pumped up from deep underground and the heat is then converted to electricity. Berkeley Lab has projects with both under grants from the California Energy Commission.)
