NREL and Ecopetrol in $2.3M CRADA agreement to optimize conversion of waste biomass to ethanol

Green Car Congress

The Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between NREL and Ecopetrol aims to optimize the conversion process for bagasse (the material left over after the sugars are removed from the sugar cane) and to analyze the economic case for commercial production of biofuel from these materials.

Energy-Efficient One-Pot Process for Conversion of Biomass to HMF

Green Car Congress

A team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences reports the production of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from monosaccharide (fructose and glucose), polysaccharide (inulin) and the Jerusalem artichoke juice by a simple one-pot reaction including hydrolysis and dehydration using solid acid under mild conditions. —Yang et al.

Tsinghua Researchers Find that Sugarcane Juice is a Good Fermentation Feedstock for Algal Biodiesel

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have shown that sugarcane juice is a good feedstock for biodiesel production, when used to support the growth of the alga Chlorella protothecoides by heterotrophic fermentation. Conversion ratios of sugar/biomass and sugar/oil using SCH were 15.2 higher than that using glucose, respectively.

IH2 technology licensed to India-based SunLight Fuels; liquid hydrocarbon fuels from bagasse

Green Car Congress

Bagasse is the fibrous residue remaining after the extraction of juice from the crushed stalks of sugarcane. The FEL-2 engineering package is being completed for the green-field IH 2 process plant by KBR, Inc. Because only the inedible residue is used in the IH 2 process, there is no direct competition between food and fuel.

Cellulosic sugars company Edeniq raises more than $16M

Green Car Congress

The funding will support the roll-out of Edeniq’s PATHWAY Platform, which increases ethanol yield at existing plants by three to six percent through a more complete conversion of starch and cellulosic corn kernel fiber into ethanol. The plant is co-located with Usina Vale’s ethanol and sugar production suite in Sao Paulo State, Brazil.
