Ignoring the briefly popular commercial electrics around at the turn of the last century, EVs have been experimental concepts or limited edition runs until relatively recently. Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade.

Thus, the restructured GM was composed of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, while the Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands died. Production of the gasoline Equinox at CAMI will end in April, and the first Zevo 600s should come off the lines seven months later, in November. The Task Force ultimately agreed.

There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling. He likes the Nissan Altima Hybrid well enough.

Even he recognizes that the Volt will make historians forget about the (in my opinion) entirely forgettable Dodge Viper he concocted at Chrysler, as well as the 1000 horsepower Cadillac Sixteen concept car of a few years ago. The Volt will even make people forget that it was Lutz who gave us the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky.

Methanol-to-gasoline process flow diagram. Under van Wijk’s concept, a plant would produce methanol from natural gas on the North Slope using the proposed GigaMethanol technology. Van Wijk at the time said the new plant might consider the methanol-to-gasoline MTG process pioneered by ExxonMobil. Source: EMRE.
