Flight Design GmbH will debut a hybrid engine concept for light aircraft at the upcoming Aero show in Friedrichshafen, Germany (2-5 April). Flight Design developed the concept engine over the past two years with Franz Aircraft Engines. Matthias Betsch, Flight Design CEO.

Numerous components from the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive ( earlier post ) have been integrated in the design of the “Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept” engineering design. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion high-voltage battery features a modular design with a maximum voltage of 400 V.

Independent inventor Ken Hawthorn has been issued a US patent (Patent# 7,713,154) on a Fixed Pitch Continuously Variable Transmission (FPCVT) designed for higher torque applications. The FPCVT is the first positively engaging sprocket that uses standard roller chain that can change diameters while engaged, Hawthorn says. FPCVT website.

The latest version, the X4V2, was designed as a development engine for the aviation industry, and in early 2008 it was independently tested by Orbital Australia.
