A paper by a team from the University of Chicago and MIT suggests that technology-driven cost reductions in fossil fuels will lead to the continued use of fossil fuels—oil, gas, and coal—unless governments pass new taxes on carbon emissions. We need both a policy like a carbon tax and to put more R&D money into renewables.

A recent white paper by Leslie Bromberg of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and Wai K. In comparison, they noted, the technology for bio-chemical ethanol production from cellulosic biomass is not sufficiently developed yet. A full comparison between the different options has to be done, reflecting the present conditions.

Mineta cited a 2008 well-to-wheel comparison of different vehicle technologies by the MIT Electric Vehicle Team that ranked electric vehicles, diesel and turbocharged gasoline engine vehicles within a 10–15% performance band. Sales trends reflect this preference across many vehicle segments, including pickups.

That way you have a fair basis of comparison, you know, apples to apples and all that jazz. One wonders if the recent headway at MIT in building lithium ion cells using ?virus? Engineering proptypes enjoy a tax break. Companies can not sell engineering prototypes in which the company got R&D tax breaks in developing the product.
