Honda has confirmed that the 2012 Honda Insight will have CO2 emissions below 100g/km. Set to be revealed at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the revised 5-door hatchback will have an official CO2 emission figure of 96g/km.

Honda is taking on the Toyota Prius with the latest version of the Insight, which is a huge advance on the original two-seater launched in 1999. The major selling point of the Insight is its hybrid powerplant, a petrol-electric unit that reduces CO2 emissions and provides a cleaner, greener way of motoring.

It found that the American sports car churns out 488g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) - meaning 322 oak trees would be needed to absorb its emissions over the course of a year. This family-sized hybrid vehicle emits just 101g/km of CO2 - pointing out the huge discrepancy between the greenest and least green cars available in Britain.

The title of WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2009 has been awarded to the ‘next generation’ Toyota Prius, due to be launched in the UK on 1 st August 2009. The new Prius was chosen from a short-list of 10 green car finalists which were test-driven at Imperial College, London, by six of the UK’s leading green transport and environmental experts.

Volvo believes the principal of hybrid cars being exempt from the charge is outdated. Their outputs currently range from 89g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 219g/km of CO2. DRIVe with start/stop technology (pictured below) emits a mere 104g/km of CO2 and was recently named as the What Car? Green Car of the Year.
