Rolls-Royce’s tests of its first mtu fuel cell demonstrator have shown that the system can provide uninterruptible power in the event of a blackout. It is black-start capable, meaning it can be started without being connected to a power grid. This project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.

The power electronics module is connected to the e-motor via the sort of yellow-and-orange 3-phase cable typical for electric vehicles. The connection to the lithium-ion battery is established via two traction cables. When the car is not in use or in the event of a crash, power from the battery is automatically cut off.
